MRV wins at the Wines of the South 2013 competition!

Wine competitions are a great means to showcase the true quality of our wines, and it’s more than just having medals displayed on our bottles. Awards mean true quality distinction from other wines. It’s our tradition to produce quality wines from quality grapes, and you can count on that! Don’t just take our word for it, take the opinion of wine experts and come see and taste our award winning wines.

Our latest competition, Wines of the South, is an annual regional wine competition held on October 11 and 12 of 2013 and is designed to promote and celebrate the great tastes of Southern vintages. Wineries in fourteen southern states were invited to submit wines for the competition with 351 wines submitted and evaluated. MountainRose Vineyards submitted four wines and all four won medals! Jawbone 2010 and Splashdam 2012 won Silver medals and Traminette 2012 and Dorchester (2011) won Bronze.

Our new Splashdam is a varietal (100% the grape Vidal Blanc).  Splashdam is dry with no residual sugar but the citrusy aroma with the crisp grapefruit finish and green apple flavors with hints of pineapple has been unusually popular for a dry white.  Splashdam contrasts nicely with buttery or cheesy foods and is simply refreshing by itself. The finish is unusually long, tart but very pleasant. This dry white wine produced in stainless is a wine for almost everyone, served with or without food.

Jawbone 2010 was aged longer than usual to produce a more complex wine. The color is rich with dark ruby violet colors.  The plum and nutty aromas that are typical of the Chancellor grapes are followed by rich plummy flavors which your palate wants to interpret as almost sweet just before it finishes dry.  This wine, aged in oak barrels, pleases folks who enjoy some tannins with oaky, nutty flavors and a hint of spice. The complexity of this wine is the winning characteristic of quality and explains why it would medal.  Watch for the release of this new winner!
